Police find 3 shot while answering separate call

One person died and two were wounded after officers came upon the scene near North Rural and East Michigan streets early Friday.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN — Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers, responding to an unrelated call on the near east side early Friday, found three people shot near the intersection of North Rural Street and East Michigan Street, authorities said. One adult was pronounced dead at the scene. Two others were taken to local hospitals, one in critical condition and one with injuries that police described as non-life-threatening.

Police said the discovery happened in the overnight hours as officers worked a separate incident in the area and heard evidence of gunfire. The triple shooting immediately shifted resources, drawing homicide detectives, evidence technicians and East District patrols to a residential stretch just northeast of downtown. Investigators cordoned off several blocks before sunrise. IMPD said the shootings are being treated as a homicide investigation and emphasized that the original call they were handling was “unrelated” to the gunfire they encountered. No officers were injured.

Shortly after 2 a.m., patrol officers reported finding a chaotic scene along the 600 block of North Rural Street, steps from the Michigan Street corridor. Two victims were located outside; a third was found nearby as officers canvassed yards and alleys using flashlights, according to police at the scene. Medics pronounced one person dead and rushed the other two to hospitals. Detectives interviewed potential witnesses in front yards and on porches as crime lab technicians marked shell casings and photographed vehicles with apparent bullet damage. An IMPD spokesperson said the encounter began with a different service call and that officers quickly pivoted when they realized multiple people had been shot. The spokesperson called the investigation “active” as daybreak approached.

By midmorning, homicide detectives had taken the lead. Investigators said early information pointed to a dispute that spilled into the street, though the exact motive remained unclear Friday. Police did not immediately release the names or ages of the victims, citing next-of-kin notifications and ongoing medical care. Officers recovered evidence consistent with gunfire and towed at least one vehicle from the block for processing. Detectives also requested doorbell and security camera footage from homes and businesses along Rural and Michigan. IMPD later said an armed person was taken into custody for questioning in connection with the shooting; formal charging decisions will come from the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office after detectives submit a case file. Whether more than one shooter was involved remained under review.

The stretch of Rural and Michigan sits in a dense grid of older homes east of downtown, a corridor that has seen both redevelopment and repeated violence over the years. Residents reported waking to sirens, spotlights and the sound of officers knocking on doors. Some described hearing several sharp cracks that they first mistook for fireworks before police flooded the area. The discovery came during a week of heightened activity on the east side, where IMPD has responded to a series of late-night disturbances and separate shootings within a few miles of Friday’s scene. Records show the neighborhood has been a frequent focus of patrols and community outreach events aimed at mediating disputes and gathering tips.

Police said detectives will use ballistic testing, hospital interviews and any recovered footage to piece together the sequence of events. The Marion County Coroner’s Office will release the name of the person who died after notifying relatives and will determine the exact cause and manner of death. If prosecutors approve charges, initial hearings would be scheduled at the City-County Building; preliminary hearings in similar cases typically occur within two to three business days once an arrest affidavit is filed. IMPD planned routine updates through the department’s media office and social channels as significant milestones are reached in the case. Officers maintained extra patrols around Rural and Michigan through the afternoon while crime scene tape came down in stages.

Neighbors on Rural Street described a heavy police presence before dawn and a quiet, uneasy morning once the block reopened. A woman sweeping her front steps said she saw cruisers “everywhere” and watched as detectives walked the sidewalk grid by grid. Another resident, lugging groceries to a porch, shook his head and said he had just put his children back to bed when more sirens sounded. Street crews later collected orange evidence markers and bundled up sections of tape as traffic resumed on Michigan. By lunchtime, only a few damp shoe prints and chalk outlines from the evidence team remained on the cracked concrete.

As of Friday evening, IMPD said the investigation remained open and active, with detectives reviewing interviews and digital evidence. The next public update is expected once the coroner identifies the person who died and investigators determine whether to recommend charges to prosecutors.
