Police fatally shoot 13-year-old armed with pellet gun

UTICA, NY – A deadly incident unfolded in Utica, New York, where a 13-year-old boy was fatally shot by police following a pursuit. The Utica Police Department stated that the teen displayed what they mistakenly identified as a handgun at the time, prompting them to open fire. They later revealed that the teen had been wielding a replica Glock handgun, which they found to be a pellet gun.

Authorities detailed that the incident occurred around 10 p.m. on Friday, involving two teenagers. On addressing the duo, one of them attempted to escape, initiating a chase. While fleeing, the teenager reportedly pointed the fake handgun towards the officers, leading them to shoot.

The boy, identified as an Asian male named Nyah Mway, was immediately offered first aid following the incident and transported to Wynn Hospital for treatment, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Utica Police maintained that the tragic incident elevates the critical issues faced by the community, primarily law enforcement, and underscored their ceaseless commitment to ensuring street safety. The event sparked attention around video footage circulating on social media platforms, which the police claim are incomplete portrayals of the scenario.
