MINNEAPOLIS, MN – A late-night shooting near a Minneapolis encampment on Monday resulted in one fatality and five injuries, according to the Minneapolis Police Department.
The incident occurred shortly before 11:30 p.m. at the intersection of 17th and Franklin avenues in the city’s Seward neighborhood. Officers from multiple law enforcement agencies, including Minneapolis park police, University of Minnesota police, and Metro Transit police, responded to the scene alongside fire crews and multiple emergency medical teams.
Authorities reported that an unruly crowd of over 20 individuals had gathered at the scene, which required police intervention to disperse.
Of the six shooting victims, a woman succumbed to her injuries at Hennepin Healthcare. Her identity is yet to be disclosed by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office. Another male victim sustained life-threatening injuries, while two other men and two women are expected to make recoveries.
At the scene, police recovered a firearm and arrested an individual for obstruction and unrelated warrants. The Minneapolis Police Department is actively seeking information and encourages anyone with insights into the shooting to reach out anonymously via Crime Stoppers.
This violent incident occurred shortly after Metro Transit police and Minneapolis firefighters were called to the same area to assist a man whose legs were caught between a light rail train and the platform. He was treated for minor injuries and has been released from the hospital.
