Norman police arrested a 19-year-old resident on two burglary counts as investigators examine another recent break-in at the same complex.
NORMAN, OK — A 19-year-old man was arrested after police said he entered multiple apartments early Sunday at an off-campus housing complex near the University of Oklahoma, an incident captured in part by a resident’s doorbell camera.
Norman police identified the man as Gavin Vanderven and said he was booked into the Cleveland County Detention Center on two counts of burglary. The Sept. 27 arrest at Callaway House came six days after another resident at the complex reported waking to find an unknown person going through drawers. Police said investigators are working to determine whether the incidents are connected.
Officers responded to Callaway House, 333 E. Brooks St., after receiving a report of a burglary in progress, according to the Norman Police Department. A resident told police they woke up and found an unknown person inside their room. The person left the apartment, and the resident called 911.
Police said responding officers then learned the individual had entered a second apartment. Officers cleared that unit before receiving information that the person had gone into a third apartment. Police made contact with Vanderven there and identified him as a resident of the third apartment. He was taken into custody and booked on the two burglary counts.
KFOR reported that OU student Jillian Munger received an alert from a Ring doorbell camera and saw a naked man moving through the hallway and trying apartment doors. Munger told the station the man approached her door, noticed the camera and moved toward another unit. She said residents later saw police escort a man from the building in handcuffs.
The camera had been installed after the earlier incident at the complex, according to KFOR. A lease agreement provided to the station said surveillance devices such as Ring and Blink cameras cannot be installed inside or outside an apartment without prior written permission from the landlord. The circumstances have led some residents and parents to raise questions about security at the property and the restrictions on resident-installed cameras.
American Campus Communities, which operates Callaway House, told KFOR that it was aware of Sunday’s incident and was working with Norman police. The company said it recognized residents’ concerns and was reviewing additional measures intended to strengthen safety and security at the community. The company said it could not provide further information because the investigation remained active.
The University of Oklahoma also said it was aware of the off-campus incidents. In a statement reported by KFOR, the university said it follows established procedures to assess safety concerns and takes measures when warranted. The investigation itself is being handled by the Norman Police Department because the incidents occurred at an off-campus property.
The Sept. 27 case followed a similar report at Callaway House on Sept. 21. Police said a resident in that incident woke up and discovered an unknown individual going through drawers inside the apartment. The person fled and could not be located. Police have not said that Vanderven was responsible for that earlier incident.
The Norman Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Section is continuing to investigate both incidents and determine whether they are connected. Police said additional charges could be requested as the investigation develops. The burglary counts against Vanderven are allegations, and the available records do not establish a conviction.
