A Connecticut mother of three was allegedly killed with an ax by her ex-boyfriend, who was also charged with violating a protection order and restraining order. Her 17-year-old son called 911 after seeing his mother on the floor, covered in blood.
Julie Minogue, 40, was found dead in her home on Salem Walk Tuesday night. Her ex-boyfriend Ewen DeWitt, 42, Roxbury, is accused of killing her with an axe.
Police said Minogue’s 17-year-old son called 9-1-1 after hearing screams and found his mother in a pool of blood on the kitchen floor with “multiple critical lacerations to her face and skull”. A large axe was found on the stove near the victim with evidence on it.
Police said the victim’s 3-year-old son was inside the home during the alleged slaying, but was unharmed. Police said Minogue’s toddler was in shock and didn’t respond to police presence.
A suspect matching Dewitt’s description was captured on Ring camera footage provided to news outlets. The mother of DeWitt called the police to report her son had killed his girlfriend. Police canvassed the area and found DeWitt at a Dive Bar in West Haven, where he was taken into custody without incident.
Minogue had protective orders against DeWitt for previous domestic violence incidents, including a fight in 2019, where DeWitt threw a playpen at his mother’s head and she began bleeding.
Authorities allege that Minogue feared DeWitt would kill her, and that he had sent several harassing text messages before the restraining order was filed.
DeWitt is being held on $5 million bond, accused of murder, reckless endangerment, risk of injury to a child, and violating restraining orders.
Julie Minogue’s children are left without a mother, who is remembered to have cared for them with a lot of love.
