HOUSTON, TX – A mother and her baby son perished in a house fire in north Houston, despite her heroic efforts to save all her children.
According to the Houston Fire Department, Giovanna Cabrera, 31, managed to rescue her 6-year-old daughter and 9-year-old son when the fire broke out in their home shortly before 5 a.m. on Saturday. She then re-entered the burning building in an attempt to rescue her 1-year-old son, Gabriel. Tragically, both mother and child did not survive.
Houston Mayor John Whitmire expressed his condolences on Facebook, acknowledging Cabrera’s final act of bravery and pledging support for the grieving family. Similarly, Houston Fire Chief Samuel Peña conveyed his deep regret over the incident and the heartbreaking loss the family has endured.
Giselle Bueno, Cabrera’s sister, spoke out and recounted her sister’s valiant efforts. However, the ultimately unsuccessful attempt to reach safety with her youngest child held tightly in her arms.
Investigations into the cause of the fire continue as the Cabrera family grapples with their sudden and devastating loss. To aid with funeral costs and to offer financial support to the surviving children and relatives, a GoFundMe page has been set up in honor of Giovanna Cabrera and her young son.
