Man steals a patrol car and carjacks a woman

KEY LARGO, FL – A dramatic and perilous chase unfolded in the Florida Keys as deputies pursued a man accused of assaulting his children’s mother, culminating in the theft of a police vehicle and a wild drive through Key Largo. The suspect, identified as Armando Lopez, allegedly launched a violent attack at his ex-partner’s home, setting off a series of alarming events.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office had been attempting to apprehend Lopez when the situation escalated. As the officers moved in, Lopez, shirtless and undeterred by a taser, seized a sergeant’s patrol car. The theft was caught on a dash cam, depicting the suspect’s reckless escape through neighborhood streets.

The chase took a startling turn when Lopez, impersonating an officer, flagged down a red SUV. The unsuspecting driver pulled over, only to be carjacked by Lopez. The pursuit continued at high speed, with deputies in close pursuit, until it ended in a crash that left the stolen vehicle upside down.

Authorities revealed that the incident began earlier that day when Lopez allegedly attempted to murder his ex-girlfriend. The chilling 911 call made by his daughter painted a stark picture of the violence, as she pleaded for help while witnessing the attack.

Sergeant James Hager arrived swiftly at the scene, finding the woman severely injured. Despite the chaos, Lopez managed to commandeer the patrol car, which also contained a rifle, exacerbating the threat. Even after being apprehended, Lopez remained defiant, resisting arrest.

Lopez is now facing a multitude of charges, while the injured sergeant, who was assaulted during the altercation, is expected to recover. The victim of the initial attack, suffering from broken bones and lacerations, is on a long path to recovery.

The quick thinking and bravery of Lopez’s daughter, who called 911, were crucial in alerting authorities and preventing further tragedy. Law enforcement officials praised her timely intervention, underscoring the critical role she played in the unfolding drama.

The incident has left the Upper Keys community shaken, highlighting both the dangers officers face and the unpredictable nature of domestic violence incidents.
