NORTH MIAMI-DADE, FL – A police chase in North Miami-Dade ended in tragedy after a man was fatally shot by sheriff’s deputies. The incident began when deputies attempted to stop the driver of a yellow Corvette for having tinted windows, according to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office.
The pursuit started near Northwest 66th Street and 22nd Avenue. As the driver fled, the chase wound through local streets, ultimately concluding at an apartment complex on a dead-end street at Northwest Fourth Court and 85th Street.
When the driver exited the vehicle, authorities claim he was armed, prompting a deputy to open fire. Residents in the area reported hearing multiple gunshots during the incident.
“I just heard a couple of shots, about 12 gunshots rang out,” said one witness. “Then I went to see, and you couldn’t see him because he was behind the car.”
Officials expressed regret over the outcome, suggesting the situation could have ended differently had the driver complied with the initial stop. “This could have been just a citation, and everyone would have gone home,” a deputy remarked. “Unfortunately, he chose not to stop and came out armed.”
Family members at the scene identified the man as 24-year-old Augusto Laboy Jr. However, authorities have yet to officially confirm his identity.
The shooting has raised questions and concerns among residents and family members, with many seeking answers about the escalation of events leading to the fatal encounter.
The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office is conducting a thorough investigation into the incident, and further details are expected to emerge as the inquiry progresses.
