Man drives to job after being shot, airlifted

Deputies say the 22-year-old reached his workplace with bullet wounds before coworkers aided him.

HOUSTON, TX — A 22-year-old man who was shot early Friday in northwest Harris County drove himself to his job near Highway 290 and asked coworkers for help before he was flown to a hospital in critical condition, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said.

Authorities say the case is in its early stages, with investigators working to determine where the shooting happened and why. Sheriff’s officials said the man may have been wounded during a possible road-rage encounter before arriving at the 22700 block of Northwest Lake Drive around 7:25 a.m. The victim, whose name was not released, underwent surgery Friday. Detectives reported finding two bullet holes in the man’s car and said they had not identified a suspect by Friday evening.

Deputies and emergency crews were called to the industrial area shortly after 7 a.m., where the man had pulled into his workplace and walked inside seeking help, according to Sgt. Freder Muñoz of the sheriff’s office. “Once he arrived on location, he entered the premises of his employment where he asked for help,” Muñoz said, adding that a coworker rendered first aid until medics arrived. Life Flight transported the victim from the scene in critical condition with wounds to his shoulder and a round that traveled through his neck, Muñoz said. Investigators said the victim was able to describe the moments after he was shot but could not pinpoint the exact location of the gunfire.

On Friday morning, deputies secured the parking lot while crime scene units examined the vehicle for ballistic evidence and documented damage. Muñoz said the victim’s car showed at least two bullet strikes. The sheriff’s office said no suspect description was available and that the path the victim drove before reaching work was still being mapped out. Officials said the possibility of a road-rage incident is under review but cautioned that motive remains unknown. The victim’s condition after surgery was not disclosed beyond the initial description of “critical,” and authorities said his family had been notified.

Northwest Lake Drive runs through a cluster of warehouses and service businesses north of U.S. 290 in unincorporated Harris County, an area where morning traffic funnels toward major corridors. Deputies said the man may have been shot elsewhere and then continued driving until he reached the workplace. Life Flight landed nearby to take the victim to a trauma center as deputies closed off access points and directed arriving workers away from the scene. The sheriff’s office said the first call for help came from employees at the site after the wounded man walked in and asked for assistance.

Investigators said the timeline begins before sunrise, with the victim on the road heading to work. The precise location of the shooting had not been identified as of Friday night, and the agency said they were working to retrace his route. Detectives are checking for cameras along roads leading into the industrial park and on buildings within the complex. Shell casings, if any, had not been recovered from a known scene because the shooting location remained unclear, officials said. The car will be processed for additional physical evidence and trajectory analysis to estimate where the shots originated.

The sheriff’s office initially reported the victim’s age as 25 but later corrected it to 22 after confirming with hospital and family records, officials said. Muñoz said deputies were focused on establishing whether another driver was involved and, if so, where the confrontation began. He said any specific vehicle descriptions or plate numbers were not available. “We’re still gathering details and trying to determine exactly where this happened,” Muñoz said. “Right now, we don’t have a suspect.”

Deputies emphasized that the case is classified as an aggravated assault with a deadly weapon while investigators sort out the circumstances. If a suspect is identified, the case could be presented to prosecutors for charges. Officials said an update would be provided if surveillance images or additional witness accounts emerge. The sheriff’s office did not announce a briefing schedule but said detectives planned to continue interviews and evidence collection through the weekend. Any public records or additional descriptions, if obtained, are expected to be included in the agency’s next written update.

Employees arriving for their shifts Friday described a heavy emergency response as helicopters circled overhead and patrol units blocked the driveway into the complex. A worker who said he helped direct medics to the injured man’s location said crews moved quickly to stabilize him before the flight. Another employee said investigators asked about security cameras facing the lot and loading areas. The sheriff’s office said those contacts would continue as detectives build a timeline from the moment the man was shot to when he reached the building.

As of late Friday, deputies said the investigation remained open with no arrests. The next expected milestone is an investigative update from the sheriff’s office if detectives identify the shooting location or develop a suspect description over the weekend.
