Houston police said a woman was taken into custody as investigators work to determine what happened inside the couple’s apartment.
HOUSTON, TX — A man in his 20s died after being stabbed during an altercation with his girlfriend at a Houston apartment complex Wednesday night, police said, while investigators cautioned that they had not yet determined exactly how the confrontation unfolded.
Houston Police Department officers responded shortly before 10 p.m. Wednesday to the Heights at 1520 Apartments on Oliver Street, near Washington Avenue. Police found the wounded man in the complex’s parking garage after he apparently made his way out of an apartment. He was taken to a hospital, where he later died. A woman who police said was in a relationship with the man was found injured inside the apartment and was also taken to a hospital.
Investigators said the man and woman were in their 20s and lived at the apartment, although police said the man would come and go from the residence. Their names had not been released as of Thursday. Police said the man suffered a stab wound to his shoulder. Authorities had not announced any charges in connection with his death.
Police said the woman had been at a bar with a friend earlier Wednesday while the man was at work. Both later returned to the apartment, where an argument developed, according to investigators. Police were still trying to establish what happened during the confrontation and who was responsible for the injuries.
Lt. R. Willkens of the Houston Police Department told reporters that investigators believed the dispute may have been connected to the woman returning home after being at the bar. He said detectives still had significant work to do before they could determine how the stabbing occurred or identify a suspect.
After he was injured, the man left the apartment and made his way to the parking garage, police said. A witness called 911 after finding him there, and Houston Fire Department personnel provided emergency treatment before he was taken to the hospital.
Officers found the woman inside the apartment with a cut to her wrist, according to police. Investigators said she had been speaking with her mother by phone and expressing thoughts of killing herself. Officers took her into custody without further injury, and she was transported to a hospital for treatment.
Police also said officers had previously responded to the apartment for domestic violence calls. Authorities did not immediately release additional details about those earlier incidents, and the existence of previous calls does not establish what happened during Wednesday night’s confrontation.
The investigation remained active Thursday. Police had not publicly identified the man or woman, determined who initiated the confrontation or announced whether the woman would face criminal charges. Investigators were continuing to gather evidence and determine the sequence of events that led to the man’s death.
