Man brandishing weapon shot and killed by responding officers

LOS ANGELES, CA – A tense scene unfolded in North Hills as Los Angeles Police Department officers fatally shot a man reportedly armed with a gun. The incident occurred near Parthenia Street and the 405 Freeway, drawing significant attention from the community.

A resident of a nearby apartment complex claimed she witnessed the man brandishing the weapon and pointing it at passing vehicles. It was her call, among others, that alerted the police to the situation. However, LAPD has not yet confirmed these specifics.

According to LAPD Captain Mike Bland, officers received multiple reports of an armed individual in the area shortly before 5:30 p.m. An LAPD helicopter located the man and guided officers to his position. Upon arrival, the situation escalated, leading to at least one officer discharging their weapon, striking the suspect.

The man was transported to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries. A handgun was reportedly found at the scene, but details remain scarce as the investigation is still in its early stages. Captain Bland emphasized that further information would be released as it becomes available.

When questioned about whether officers issued commands before firing, Captain Bland stated that officers strive to de-escalate whenever possible. However, he acknowledged that rapidly evolving situations sometimes limit their options.

Investigators are actively seeking video evidence and interviewing witnesses to piece together the events leading up to the shooting. It is unclear if body-worn cameras captured the incident or how many officers discharged their weapons.

This marks the 32nd officer-involved shooting by LAPD this year, a significant increase from 21 incidents at the same point last year. Many of these confrontations have involved individuals with weapons or realistic replicas.

Captain Bland confirmed that no officers were injured during the encounter. The community remains on edge as they await further details from the ongoing investigation.
