Man arrested trying to sell $500k worth of stolen sports cards

EL SEGUNDO, CA – A dramatic arrest unfolded in El Segundo, where police apprehended a man suspected of attempting to sell a cache of stolen sports memorabilia valued at over half a million dollars. The arrest, captured on video, revealed a broader scheme involving identity theft and a significant haul of stolen goods.

The suspect, accompanied by a female accomplice, attempted to offload stolen sports cards at a local memorabilia store. The duo allegedly played a role in a larger identity theft ring, investigators revealed. Among the items recovered were autographed cards, including one signed by the late basketball legend Kobe Bryant.

The arrest took place at Bull Pen Sports Headquarters, a well-known trading hub for sports memorabilia. Co-owner Mitchell Gutenberg recounted how the suspects first visited the store in late March, presenting tens of thousands of dollars worth of sports cards. Claiming they were liquidating a collection inherited from a deceased relative, the suspects were initially convincing.

“At first, they seemed genuine,” Gutenberg said. “We looked over the cards, checked their authenticity, and made a purchase.” However, the situation took a turn when the cards were later reported stolen, prompting heightened vigilance from the store.

When the suspects returned to the shop, the store’s security measures, including surveillance cameras and motion detectors, played a crucial role. The system allowed the store owner to alert the police quickly, leading to the suspects’ capture.

The male suspect was found with a loaded gun in his waistband, hundreds of stolen IDs, and a vehicle filled with contraband, including methamphetamine. The police action that followed was swift, with officers tackling the suspect before he could escape.

Both individuals have criminal histories and remain in custody. The stolen memorabilia is set to be returned to its rightful owners, according to the shop’s owner.

The case highlights the intersection of identity theft and the lucrative world of sports memorabilia, where high-value items often attract criminal elements. The successful apprehension was possible due to the store’s advanced security measures and the quick response from local law enforcement.
