Investigators say Maurice Tyrell Isaac was beaten and fatally shot before his body was burned and left in a wooded area.
SUMTER, SC — Authorities are investigating the killing of 20-year-old Maurice Tyrell Isaac after his burned body was found in a wooded area of Sumter County, with the sheriff saying investigators believe he was beaten, shot and killed elsewhere before his remains were moved.
The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office said the homicide appears to be gang-related and was not believed to be a random act of violence. Sheriff Anthony Dennis said investigators suspect the manner in which Isaac’s body was left may have been intended to send a message, though authorities have not publicly identified a gang or disclosed what evidence led them to suspect gang involvement.
A resident called 911 about 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, after finding Isaac’s body in woods near Cedar Avenue and Industrial Road, according to authorities. Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker identified Isaac and said he died from a gunshot wound. Investigators said an autopsy found that Isaac had suffered a single gunshot wound to the head and had also been beaten before his body was burned.
Authorities believe Isaac was killed at another location and that his body was later brought to the area where it was discovered. Dennis said investigators have obtained surveillance video from the surrounding area that helped them develop a timeframe for when the body was left there. Officials have not publicly identified any suspects or announced any arrests.
Dennis described the case as unusual during his decades in law enforcement. He said the combination of the beating, shooting and burning led investigators to consider whether the killing was meant as a warning to others. Authorities have not released a specific motive, and the sheriff declined to explain publicly what information caused investigators to classify the case as apparently gang-related.
Isaac had been seen by his family less than 24 hours before his body was discovered, according to the sheriff. His relatives had been looking for him, but he had not been formally reported missing to law enforcement before the discovery. An obituary from Job’s Mortuary says Isaac was born Feb. 20, 2006, in Sumter and died Aug. 1.
The discovery disturbed residents living near the wooded area. Christopher Cooper, a nearby resident interviewed by local news outlets, said he was shocked that such a violent crime had occurred close to his home. Dennis also said the killing troubled his staff, particularly because of Isaac’s young age and the circumstances surrounding his death.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is assisting the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office with the investigation. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives also has been identified by local authorities as one of the agencies involved in the case. Investigators have not announced what specific evidence has been recovered or whether they believe more than one person participated in the killing.
No arrests had been publicly announced in the case as of the latest reports reviewed. Dennis said investigators are confident they will identify those responsible, while authorities continue examining evidence and seeking information from people who may know what happened to Isaac before his body was discovered.
