Gunfire struck the man’s vehicle repeatedly near Back Creek Church Road and University City Boulevard, according to local reports.
CHARLOTTE, NC — A Charlotte man escaped injury after another driver allegedly opened fire on his vehicle Wednesday morning during what authorities are investigating as a possible road rage shooting in the University City area.
The shooting happened Aug. 5 near Back Creek Church Road and University City Boulevard. The driver told WBTV he had noticed another motorist behind him driving erratically and making hand gestures before the encounter escalated. As the vehicles approached University City Boulevard, he said the other driver pulled out a gun and fired repeatedly at his vehicle.
Photographs from the aftermath showed numerous bullet holes across the vehicle. WBTV reported the driver believed about a dozen shots were fired. A separate local report, citing Charlotte-Mecklenburg police information, said the shooting happened around 10:20 a.m. and the vehicle sustained an estimated $10,000 in damage.
The driver was not hurt. He told WBTV he was especially grateful that his grandchildren were not inside the vehicle when the gunfire erupted. Authorities have not released the driver’s name, and available reports did not identify the person suspected of firing the shots.
Quenton Presson, who lives near the intersection, told WBTV he did not hear the gunfire but saw the aftermath. He said it was fortunate no one was injured and described the possibility that the shooting stemmed from road rage as frightening.
Details about what happened immediately before the shooting remain limited. The driver described erratic driving and gestures from the other motorist, but police have not publicly established a motive or released a full sequence of events. The available reporting also did not indicate that investigators had independently confirmed every part of the driver’s account.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police were investigating the shooting after it was reported. As of the most recent available reporting, authorities had not announced an arrest or publicly identified a suspect in the case.
Investigators have not released additional information about evidence recovered from the scene or whether surveillance footage captured the shooting. No injuries connected to the incident had been reported.
The investigation remained active, with key questions about the identity of the shooter and the circumstances leading to the gunfire unresolved.
