BRADENTON, FL – A homeowner in a quiet Bradenton neighborhood confronted a terrifying scenario when two masked men attempted to break into his home late Monday night. The confrontation ended with one suspect fatally shot and the other apprehended after a brief chase on foot, according to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities identified the surviving suspect, Michael A. Soda, who now faces charges of armed burglary with the potential for additional charges. During a court appearance, Soda was ordered to remain in custody pending his next hearing. Investigators are collaborating with Border Patrol to gather more information about the suspects’ backgrounds.
The Sheriff’s Office revealed that the surviving suspect is of Chilean descent and reportedly entered the United States via California several months ago. His visa, which was meant to expire in September, was not renewed, and he eventually made his way to the Tampa area.
The incident unfolded in the River Club neighborhood, a community known for its tranquility. Residents were startled to hear gunshots ring out, disrupting their evening activities. One local, who was visiting family for the holidays, described the unsettling experience of hearing the shots while watching a movie.
Long-time residents expressed shock and disbelief that such an event could occur in their community, especially so soon after Christmas. Many have lived in the area for over two decades without experiencing such violence.
Upon arriving at the scene, investigators found the neighborhood returning to normalcy, with residents going about their daily routines. Despite the unsettling events, the community expressed gratitude toward the homeowner and law enforcement for their swift response.
The investigation remains ongoing as officials work to piece together the events leading up to the attempted burglary and the suspects’ motives. The Sheriff’s Office continues to assure residents that they are committed to maintaining the safety and security of the community.
