ICE officer shoots at suspect’s vehicle

PHOENIX, AZ – Two separate incidents involving law enforcement shootings unfolded within hours of each other, leaving one person dead and an officer injured. The first incident occurred in Mesa, near Sausman and Ray Roads, where gunfire resulted in a fatality and an officer sustaining injuries.

Meanwhile, in the northern part of the city, a dramatic scene played out on Interstate 17 near Dove Valley Road. An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer discharged his weapon during a traffic stop, leading to the temporary closure of the freeway.

The ICE operation began when officers attempted to stop a vehicle driven by Jose Garcia Sto, identified as an undocumented immigrant from Honduras. As officers approached, Garcia Sto reportedly attempted to flee, prompting an officer to fire his weapon, striking the vehicle.

Both the officer involved and Garcia Sto were taken to the hospital. The officer’s condition remains undisclosed, while Garcia Sto was treated for a wound and is in stable condition. Details about the nature of his injury have not been clarified.

This incident is now under the investigation of the FBI. Video footage from the scene showed a heavy law enforcement presence, with vehicles blocking the off-ramp as the investigation continued.

A retired law enforcement officer emphasized the inherent dangers of traffic stops, noting the unpredictability and potential for escalation. “Vehicle stops are one of the most dangerous tasks police perform,” he said, highlighting the risks in dealing with unknown individuals in traffic.

Efforts to obtain comments from involved agencies were unsuccessful, as requests for interviews were either denied or unanswered. The investigation remains active, and updates are expected as more information becomes available.

The incident underscores the complexities and perils law enforcement officers face, particularly when a moving vehicle is perceived as a potential threat. Authorities are continuing to evaluate whether the use of force was justified in this situation.
