Brittany Gamble’s family says videos posted online raise questions about her final days.
HOUSTON, TX — Houston police have reopened the death investigation of 34-year-old Brittany Gamble, whose body was found in November inside a man’s east Houston apartment after her family reported her missing.
The case has drawn new attention because Gamble’s family says it found videos that appear to show her with the man before and after her death. Police had told relatives last month the case was closed and that no crime had been found, according to the family. Houston police later confirmed the investigation is open and that detectives are reviewing information and evidence.
Gamble was admitted to St. Joseph’s Medical Center in downtown Houston on Nov. 17 for altered mental status, her sister, Rebekah Falke, said. Gamble had Type 1 diabetes and epilepsy, conditions that relatives say made her vulnerable when she was confused or medically unstable. Falke said the family was not notified when Gamble was released from the hospital. “It was just so disturbing and it’s a nightmare,” Falke said after describing videos the family says it found online. Relatives reported Gamble missing on Nov. 20 after learning she had left the hospital and had not contacted them.
Houston police said officers were called Nov. 27 to an apartment complex at 666 Maxey Road after a report that a woman was dead inside one of the units. Officers said they met a man who told them Gamble had been staying with him since he met her on Nov. 19. Houston Fire Department paramedics pronounced Gamble dead at the scene. Officers reported an abrasion on her face and bruising on her upper body. The Harris County Medical Examiner’s Office responded to the apartment and believed Gamble had been dead for about three days before she was found.
Falke said relatives later searched a Metro-related Facebook page and found what they believe was the last video of Gamble alive. She said the video showed a man filming Gamble at a Metro station after she left the hospital. In the video, Gamble can be heard saying, “Get home” and “need to get some water,” according to her family. Falke said other videos on the same man’s page appeared to show Gamble after her death. She said one video showed the man lying beside her body on an air mattress. The man has not been publicly charged in connection with Gamble’s death.
Police first described the case in December as an ongoing death investigation. The department said then that Gamble had been reported missing on Nov. 20 and that the cause of death would be determined by an autopsy. Relatives said they later were told the death had not been classified as a crime. The family has questioned how Gamble moved from a hospital discharge to a stranger’s apartment, why emergency contacts were not notified, and how long videos linked to the case were available online before investigators reviewed them. The official cause and manner of death have not been publicly announced by police.
The renewed investigation now turns on evidence review, including the family’s account of online videos and the original findings at the Maxey Road apartment. HPD said detectives are again examining information and evidence in the case. No hearing date, charge or arrest has been announced. The family is pressing for a fuller review of the timeline from Nov. 17, when Gamble entered the hospital, to Nov. 27, when officers found her body. Relatives said they learned about her death only after the medical examiner already had her body.
Falke said the family believes Gamble was in distress in the days before her death and that the videos show signs that should have prompted faster action. She said relatives are still trying to understand who saw Gamble, what condition she was in and whether anyone tried to get medical help. “They suspected that she had possibly been dead for multiple days prior to the discovery of her body,” Falke said. The family has described Gamble as a daughter, sister, aunt and friend whose medical needs were known to those close to her.
The case remains open with the Houston Police Department’s homicide division. As of May 16, police have not announced a suspect, charges or a final ruling on how Gamble died.
