Police said the armed man was killed during an attempted arrest at a Spring Branch dog daycare facility Monday night.
HOUSTON, TX — Houston police fatally shot a man wanted on a child sex crime warrant Monday night after officers said he displayed a weapon while they tried to take him into custody at a dog daycare facility in the Spring Branch area.
The shooting happened about 9:30 p.m. Sept. 28 at Peace Love Dogs on Yupondale Drive. Police Chief Noe Diaz said the man was under investigation for alleged indecency with a child with sexual contact. His name had not been released as of Tuesday morning.
Police said members of the department’s Crime Suppression Team had been watching the man earlier in the day. Investigators located him at his workplace with the help of a drone, then spoke with a manager who told officers the man was toward the rear of the property.
According to police, the man tried to evade officers by jumping a back fence but remained on the property. Other employees were inside the business during the police response, and the manager had them leave while officers worked to take the man into custody.
Two Houston police units, including a K-9 handler and Crime Suppression Team officers, eventually entered the rear area of the property. Police said officers tried to negotiate with the man before he went into a room and turned off the light.
When officers entered the room, police said the man produced a weapon. Officers repeatedly ordered him to put it down, according to authorities. A police dog was then released, and investigators said the man made a motion that officers believed was an attempt to injure the dog.
Officers opened fire, striking the man two or three times, police said. Officers immediately began CPR, and Houston Fire Department personnel responded. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said the K-9 was not injured, and no officers were reported hurt.
Police had not publicly identified what type of weapon the man displayed as of Tuesday morning. Diaz said surveillance video from inside the business and officers’ body-worn camera footage captured portions of the encounter. Police expect the body-camera footage to be released within 30 days.
Diaz said the man had been outside Houston for some time and that the pending warrant surfaced after he returned from north Texas. The chief also said the man’s prior criminal history included a driving-while-intoxicated case and an assault involving a family member. Those prior matters were separate from the warrant officers were attempting to serve Monday.
The circumstances surrounding the officers’ use of deadly force remain under investigation. Diaz said the Harris County District Attorney’s Office and Houston Police Department internal affairs and homicide investigators will review the shooting. The department had not released the names of the officers involved or the man who was killed as of the latest reports.
