House explosion leaves four dead, two more injured

NORTHFIELD TOWNSHIP, MI – A devastating house explosion in Northfield Township, Michigan, has claimed the lives of four people, leaving two others injured. The shocking accident occurred on Saturday, December 30, 2023, and resulted in a two-acre debris field and a completely demolished single-family dwelling.

Northfield Township Police Lt. David Powell, in a social media release, detailed the arrival of police and fire services following reports of a mysterious explosion. Six occupants were discovered to have been inside the house at the time of the incident, necessitating an immediate search alongside efforts to put out the inferno.

Three residents tragically lost their lives at the scene, while the other three were rushed to a local hospital. One of the hospitalized residents later died from their injuries, according to the police statement. The identities of the victims have yet to be publicly disclosed.

A neighbor spoke to reporters, describing the terrifying incident as similar to a bomb, stating, “It was the scariest thing I’ve ever seen.”

Miraculously, no other homes in the vicinity suffered any damage. The Detroit News reported that debris from the colossal blast spanned two acres and was audible from nine miles away.

Authorities stated that the investigation into the explosion’s cause would continue for several days. However, progress has been hampered due to significant vehicle traffic on the incident’s street.

Powell extended condolences to the victims’ families in this challenging period and stressed that this remains an active investigation.
