Hotel Guest Killed Outside North Bethesda Marriott

Police identified the victim as 41-year-old Quentin Tyrone Davis and said the shooter fled on foot.

NORTH BETHESDA, MD — A 41-year-old hotel guest was shot and killed late Thursday morning in the parking lot of the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center, police said, setting off a homicide investigation near a Metro station and a busy commercial district.

Montgomery County police identified the man Friday as Quentin Tyrone Davis, who had no known address. Detectives said Davis was staying at the hotel on Marinelli Road when he was confronted outside and shot. No arrest had been announced by Friday afternoon, and police had not released a suspect description or a possible motive.

The shooting was reported about 11:37 a.m. Thursday in the 5700 block of Marinelli Road, near the hotel’s parking area and close to the North Bethesda Metro station. Officers found Davis in the lot with an apparent gunshot wound and began lifesaving measures until Montgomery County Fire Rescue personnel arrived. Davis was pronounced dead at the scene. A woman in a nearby building told a television reporter she had her window open when she heard what sounded like “this big bang” and then saw a man fall in the parking lot.

Investigators said Davis was walking alone through the parking lot toward the hotel when an unknown person approached him. Police said the person shot Davis after the confrontation and ran from the area. Officers, Montgomery County sheriff’s deputies and Metro Transit Police searched the surrounding area and nearby Metro trains. Investigators also reviewed surveillance video from the area. Authorities said video from the nearby Metro station did not show the suspected shooter boarding a train after the shooting.

The killing happened outside one of the area’s largest hotel and conference properties, across from office buildings, apartments, restaurants and retail spaces that have grown around Pike & Rose and the Metro stop. The hotel’s checkout time was near noon, and people familiar with the area said the parking lot is often busy around that hour. Police did not say whether Davis had checked out, whether he was meeting someone or whether the confrontation was captured clearly on camera. Marriott had not issued a public statement in the early reports after the shooting.

The case is being handled by detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police Major Crimes Division’s homicide unit. Police said the investigation remains active as detectives collect video, interview witnesses and track the path the shooter may have taken after leaving the hotel property. Crime Solvers of Montgomery County is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to an arrest. Tips may remain anonymous.

The scene drew a large police response Thursday as officers blocked parts of the area and searched near the hotel, Metro station and surrounding streets. Red Line riders experienced delays while police investigated near the station. The shooting stood out because it happened in daylight in a visible, high-traffic area used by hotel guests, commuters and workers. A witness said she first thought the sound was a car backfiring before looking outside and realizing someone had been shot.

As of Friday afternoon, police had not announced charges, named a suspect or disclosed a motive. The next major step in the case is expected to be the release of additional suspect information if detectives identify a person of interest or recover clearer video from the area.
