Fatal Coral Springs Shooting Draws SWAT Response and Investigation

Police said one man was found with gunshot wounds near Riverside Drive before dawn Thursday.

CORAL SPRINGS, FL — A man was found shot to death early Thursday at a residential community in Coral Springs, prompting a SWAT response, a school closure and an active homicide investigation, police said.

Coral Springs police said officers responded shortly before 3 a.m. May 14 to a report of a shooting in the 2500 block of Riverside Drive, near Royal Palm Boulevard and south of West Sample Road. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was not released by police as investigators worked through the scene and searched for evidence.

The shooting brought a large police presence to the Coral Park East townhome community and nearby residential buildings. Video from the area showed officers, SWAT members and crime scene tape around the neighborhood. A body appeared to be covered in a parking lot. Police also set up a media staging area near Riverside Drive and Northwest 24th Street while investigators worked through the morning.

Neighbors said they woke to loud bursts before dawn and did not first know they were hearing gunfire. One neighbor said the sound seemed like a tire exploding. Another said the noise first seemed like lightning. Resident Danny Raymonvil said children later asked him what was happening as they walked near the police scene. “It’s sad when you have to wake up and see this going on,” Raymonvil said.

Police have not released the victim’s age, hometown or any possible motive. A police spokesman said no information was being released about a suspect. Investigators were seen using a white tent as they processed the area. Aerial video from local news helicopters showed what appeared to be a rifle in a swimming pool at a nearby apartment building, but police had not said whether the object was tied to the killing.

The scene affected the nearby Somerset Academy Riverside campus as parents were arriving for school. Police first placed the school into a Code Red as a precaution during the investigation, then announced that Somerset Academy would be closed for the day. Police said the homicide investigation was active, but they also said there was no known threat to public safety.

The area around Royal Palm Boulevard and Riverside Drive remained a focus for investigators through the morning. Crime scene tape blocked parts of the neighborhood as officers checked the parking lot, pool area and nearby walkways. By late morning, local reports said travel lanes in the area had reopened, though police activity continued around the residential complex.

Residents described the neighborhood as quiet and family oriented. Theresa Zuniga, who lives nearby, said she was frightened after hearing a helicopter over the area around 5 a.m. “This place is very calm,” Zuniga said. Another neighbor, Sandro Wong, said Coral Springs is a quiet area and that he felt bad after learning someone had died.

The case remained under investigation Thursday evening. Police had not announced any arrest, had not released the victim’s name and had not said whether the object seen in the pool was evidence in the shooting.
