Highway patrol officer struck by car and killed

SYLMAR, CA – The southbound lanes of the 5 Freeway remain closed this morning as authorities investigate an incident involving a California Highway Patrol (CHP) officer who was struck by a vehicle while assisting a disabled car.

Early this morning, CHP officers responded to a call about a disabled Honda that had collided with the central wall and was obstructing the number three lane on the 5 Freeway, just north of the Newhall Pass. While officers were attempting to move the vehicle to the side of the road, a black Tesla approached and struck one of the officers who was on foot. The collision occurred in an area with a blind curve, complicating the situation.

The injured officer was immediately transported to the hospital in a patrol vehicle and is reported to have sustained major injuries. Fortunately, no one else involved in the incident was hurt. CHP officials expressed the emotional toll such incidents take on their team, emphasizing the daily risks officers face to ensure public safety.

In the aftermath of the collision, several individuals were detained, including the driver and two passengers of the Tesla. Authorities are investigating whether any automated driving features were in use at the time of the accident. The driver of the Honda was the sole occupant of that vehicle.

Currently, traffic is being diverted from the southbound 5 Freeway under the Newhall Pass interchange to alternative routes, while the northbound lanes remain open. Investigators are also examining whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the incident, although no arrests have been confirmed at this time.

As the investigation continues, the community is reminded of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers and the importance of driving cautiously, especially in areas with limited visibility.
