Gravy dispute sparks stabbing at KFC

Two men were arrested after a back-counter fight left a worker injured at a Craig Road restaurant, police said.

NORTH LAS VEGAS, NV — A dispute over gravy at a KFC on Craig Road turned violent Saturday, Dec. 27, when a customer went behind the counter and an employee was stabbed, according to arrest reports. Police later arrested two men identified as Gerald Carter, 32, and his uncle, James Carter, 48.

Police and court records say the confrontation started as a complaint about gravy and escalated into a fight behind the counter around 4:30 p.m. at the restaurant at 1318 W. Craig Road near Camino Al Norte. Investigators say surveillance video shows one man stabbing a worker while another put the employee in a chokehold. The worker was taken to University Medical Center. Authorities booked James and Gerald Carter on suspicion of attempted murder as the case moves into its first court hearings and prosecutors review potential charges.

According to arrest reports, Gerald Carter became upset with the gravy he received and went behind the counter to confront employees. James Carter followed. Employees told officers the pair cornered at least one worker near the drive-thru window before a struggle erupted. Investigators say video from inside the restaurant shows James Carter throwing punches and wrestling with an employee while Gerald Carter stabbed the worker several times. Officers responding to calls about the fight found the men walking away from the restaurant and detained them. During an interview with detectives, Gerald Carter said an employee had “called him names and disrespected him” and claimed his folding knife “stayed in his pocket the entire fight,” according to the reports.

Arrest records say officers recovered a large folding knife from Gerald Carter’s pocket. They noted in reports that video showed James Carter holding the worker in a chokehold for several seconds while the stabbing occurred behind the counter. The victim’s name was not released. The worker was transported to University Medical Center for treatment; police have not publicly described the extent of the injuries. Officers initially took James Carter to a hospital after he reported feeling faint following the altercation, then booked him into jail. Both men were arrested soon after the incident and remained in custody as of midweek, according to online inmate records.

The Saturday disturbance unfolded at a busy fast-food hub on Craig Road, a commercial corridor lined with restaurants and stores in North Las Vegas. Police say the case began as a customer service dispute that escalated when the men crossed the counter line, a violation that often leads to heightened charges when injuries follow. The address sits just west of Camino Al Norte, an area with steady drive-thru traffic. Investigators documented the scene and collected video that they say captures the stabbing and physical restraint. The reports do not identify other patrons, and authorities have not said how many employees were on shift when the fight began.

Court records list both men as facing attempted murder allegations stemming from the stabbing. A judge set bail at $100,000 for Gerald Carter and $10,000 for James Carter, with both held pending appearances in North Las Vegas Justice Court. Felony arraignment hearings were scheduled for Wednesday morning, Dec. 31. Prosecutors will determine whether to add or modify counts after reviewing police reports, surveillance video and medical documentation. The victim’s condition and any anticipated victim-impact statements were not immediately available. Police have not announced additional arrests and did not list any other suspects in the arrest narrative.

Inside the restaurant, employees continued giving statements as officers canvassed for witnesses and retrieved security footage. A worker told police that the confrontation began over the quality of gravy and that the customer insisted on speaking with a manager. Another person who had been with the men earlier told officers Gerald Carter left and returned multiple times, grew angrier and eventually re-entered with his uncle before both went behind the counter. “Staff had disrespected him,” Gerald Carter told investigators, according to the arrest report. Officers said video showed multiple stabbing motions during the struggle. The worker who was stabbed was treated at the hospital and released status was not provided in the report.

Police say the active investigation now shifts to charging and court scheduling. Detectives are processing the collected video and finalizing interviews. Prosecutors are expected to file formal charges following the initial hearings. If the case proceeds, a preliminary hearing would be set to determine whether sufficient evidence exists to move to district court. As of Wednesday afternoon, jail logs showed both men still in custody awaiting further court action. The restaurant did not immediately comment. Officials have not said when additional updates will be released.

As of today, both suspects remain jailed while prosecutors review the file. The next expected milestone is the formal charging decision and subsequent hearing dates following the Wednesday, Dec. 31 appearances.
