Four missing, assumed dead, after helicopter crashes in The Gulf of Mexico

Searches for four people aboard a helicopter that crashed in the Gulf of Mexico, 10 miles offshore of Southwest Pass, Louisiana, have been suspended by the U.S. Coast Guard.

In the early hours of Thursday morning, the helicopter crashed while leaving an oil platform.

Approximately 180 square miles were searched over the course of eight hours, according to officials.

In a statement, the Coast Guard said:

“We extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to the family and friends during this difficult time,” said Lt. Cmdr. Kevin Keefe, Coast Guard Sector New Orleans Search and Rescue Mission Coordinator.

This crash will be investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board.
