Former NFL Linebacker charged in girlfriend’s killing at Tennessee home

Investigators say a suspected stabbing and evidence tampering point to homicide in Ooltewah.

OOLTEWAH, TN — Former NFL linebacker Darron Lee was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and tampering with evidence after his girlfriend was found dead inside a suburban Chattanooga-area home, authorities said.

Deputies were called to a residence on Snow Cone Way on Feb. 5 after receiving a report of CPR in progress. First responders found the woman unresponsive with multiple traumatic injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene, and investigators quickly determined the death was a homicide.

An arrest affidavit said the victim suffered severe bruising and a suspected stab wound to her abdomen, along with other injuries indicating a violent struggle. Investigators reported blood in several areas of the home, including signs that some blood had been cleaned up. Officials said the physical evidence did not support Lee’s claim that the woman may have fallen or collapsed.

Authorities also noted that Lee had injuries consistent with a fight. Broken glass was found inside the home, and detectives documented damage and blood patterns that suggested a confrontation rather than an accident. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

The victim’s name has not been released. Court records describe additional injuries, including extensive bruising to the head and torso. Investigators said they are continuing to interview potential witnesses and review forensic evidence collected from the scene.

Lee, 31, played college football at Ohio State before being selected in the first round of the 2016 NFL draft by the New York Jets. He later played for the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills, and his professional football career ended in 2020.

He is being held without bond in the Hamilton County jail. A court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 11. Prosecutors said the investigation remains active and additional charges are possible.
