MIAMI, FL – Seven corrections officers in Florida are facing serious charges following an investigation into the alleged beating of an inmate at Dade Correctional Institution. The officers, including a sergeant and lieutenant, are accused of either participating in the assault or covering it up by lying to investigators.
Sergeant Deandre Hill, one of the accused, declined to comment as he left jail. The charges stem from an incident involving inmate Christopher Castro, who was reportedly taken from a shower to a secluded area without surveillance cameras and then beaten while handcuffed.
Lieutenant Shrika Clark appeared in felony bond court, where she confirmed she could post bond. Clark faces charges of evidence tampering, along with other officers, including Captain Joe England and officers Jordi Callero and Traven Norman. The allegations against them involve perjury and failure to report the use of force.
The incident, which occurred in April, allegedly involved Clark directing another inmate to clean the blood left from the assault and misleading a colleague about the events of the day. All but Clark and England are accused of being directly involved in the physical attack.
The Florida Department of Corrections swiftly terminated the employment of the involved staff members, emphasizing its zero-tolerance policy against misconduct towards inmates. The department issued a statement asserting that such behavior is not acceptable.
Some of the accused officers have already posted bail. As the investigation continues, questions remain about the culture within the correctional facility and the measures in place to prevent such incidents.
The case has drawn attention to the broader issue of inmate treatment and the responsibilities of correctional staff to uphold ethical standards. The legal proceedings will likely explore the extent of the cover-up and the accountability of those involved.
With the spotlight on the Dade Correctional Institution, the outcome of this case could have significant implications for the state’s correctional system and its approach to handling misconduct allegations.
