Fentanyl found in deceased baby’s bottle, teen mom arrested

A tragic incident unfolded in Florida last month when a 9-month-old baby boy lost his life after his teenage mother allegedly put a lethal dose of fentanyl into his bottle. The 17-year-old mother has been arrested and is facing charges of aggravated manslaughter and possession of a controlled substance. The shocking revelation came to light during a press conference held by Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper, who expressed his dismay at the actions of the young mother. This heartbreaking case highlights the importance of responsible parenting and the need for support systems for struggling parents.

On June 26th, authorities responded to a distress call at a residence in Callahan, Florida, where they found the baby boy unconscious on the living room floor. Despite the deputy’s efforts to revive him through CPR, the baby was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. Initially, the mother claimed ignorance about the cause of her baby’s condition, stating that she had put him to sleep and couldn’t wake him up. However, subsequent investigations revealed a shocking truth.

During an interview with investigators, the teenage mother confessed to her actions, stating that she had mistaken the fentanyl for cocaine. Exhausted and wanting to take a nap, she decided to put the substance in her baby’s bottle, believing it would help him sleep. Sheriff Leeper expressed his disbelief at the mother’s actions, questioning how a mother could harm her own child in such a manner.

The medical examiner’s report confirmed the presence of fentanyl in the baby’s blood, leading to the conclusion that the cause of death was a fentanyl overdose. The Drug Enforcement Administration states that just two milligrams of fentanyl can lead to death, depending on various factors. Sheriff Leeper revealed that the amount found in the baby’s system could have killed approximately ten people. Further testing is being conducted on the baby’s bottle by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

While there were others present in the home at the time of the incident, investigators believe that the mother’s decisions alone led to the tragic outcome. The names of the mother and the deceased child have not been released to the public. Sheriff Leeper also mentioned that during the booking process, the mother indicated that she may be pregnant again.
