Father, son robbed during Facebook Marketplace meetup

Police are investigating after the pair were lured to a residential garage and confronted by teenagers with guns, the family said.

LAS VEGAS, NV — A father and his 14-year-old son said they were robbed at gunpoint during a Facebook Marketplace meetup on Tuesday afternoon on Rimwood Court near South Durango Drive and West Rochelle Avenue. The family had arranged to buy a $1,200 e-bike when two armed teenagers confronted them in a garage, according to the father.

The case highlights a familiar pattern that local officers have warned about in recent months. The buyer told a reporter he agreed to meet away from a police station after the seller claimed to be too young to go there. When the pair arrived at about 3:45 p.m., a teen led them toward a garage where two others appeared with guns. Investigators are reviewing the report and similar calls in the same area. No arrests were announced as of Sunday. The listing that drew the family remains online, the father said.

Justin Perea said he had been messaging with someone identifying himself as Mason about the e-bike through the app. Perea and his son, Ryder, drove to the neighborhood and parked. Perea said Mason met them outside and walked them toward a nearby garage. “They had hoods and then masks, so it was so fast they had the guns out,” Perea said. He said he stepped between the teenagers and his son, handed over the cash he brought for the purchase, and backed away. The pair returned to their car and called police. Officers took a report and told them similar incidents had been reported at the same location, Perea said.

Perea said the teens did not fire any shots and fled after taking the money. He said the meeting spot was suggested after the seller claimed he was not allowed to go to a police station. Ryder said the interaction lasted only a minute once the guns appeared. “Don’t message that ad, don’t text them, just leave it be,” Ryder said. The teen described one of the suspects as a boy close to his own age, wearing a dark sweatshirt and face covering. Precise ages of the suspects were not known. Police did not immediately release a formal description.

Records and prior reports show online marketplace robberies rise and fall with holiday demand, when cash meetups for electronics and bikes are common. In past years, agencies across the Las Vegas Valley have designated parking lots with cameras as exchange zones. Neighbors near Durango and Rochelle said they saw patrol cars after the call on Tuesday. One resident on the block said she has noticed unfamiliar cars idling on the cul-de-sac in recent weeks. The e-bike at the center of this case was advertised at $1,200, a price Perea said matched other listings.

As of Sunday, police had not announced arrests or named suspects. The department is collecting statements from the father and son, reviewing any video from nearby homes, and comparing the report to earlier calls at the address. Investigators typically check marketplace accounts and phone numbers tied to the listing to identify users. If detectives apply for warrants tied to the platform or mobile devices, those filings would go through local courts. Any charges would likely include robbery with the use of a deadly weapon. A briefing schedule was not posted as of Sunday afternoon. The family said they also notified the platform that the ad remained live.

On the block, delivery vans and weekend joggers moved past on Saturday as neighbors swapped updates about the case. A man who lives a few doors down said he has seen teenagers walking between houses to cut through to the next street. Another neighbor said she was surprised to learn similar robberies had been reported nearby. Perea said he did not sleep after the encounter and that Ryder is still shaken. “It was over before I even understood what happened,” Perea said. “I just wanted to get my kid out of there.”

By Sunday evening, the family said they were waiting to hear from detectives about any leads pulled from the report and any camera footage. Police had not said whether they recovered the e-bike listing or tied it to specific accounts. The next update is expected once investigators finish canvassing the area and review video from homes near Rimwood Court.
