Elderly woman killed in hit-and-run

MIAMI, FL – Authorities are intensifying their search for the driver involved in a fatal hit-and-run incident that claimed the life of an elderly woman in Miami. The tragic event unfolded just steps from the victim’s residence, prompting police to seek the community’s assistance in identifying the driver responsible.

The incident took place early Monday morning around 8 a.m. at the intersection of Northwest Seventh Avenue and 60th Street. Police officers responding to the scene found 76-year-old Carissa Ortiz lying unconscious in the street. Despite efforts from fire rescue, Ortiz was pronounced dead at the scene. Preliminary investigations suggest she was attempting to cross the street when she was struck.

The driver involved in the accident fled without offering any assistance or notifying emergency services, leaving Ortiz to succumb to her injuries. This act has spurred a plea from law enforcement for anyone with information to come forward and aid in the investigation.

“We’re urging our community to help us locate the person responsible,” a police spokesperson said. “This is not just a violation of the law, it’s a moral obligation to stop and render aid in such situations.”

Investigators combed the area for witnesses and surveillance footage in hopes of identifying the vehicle involved. However, details about the make and model of the suspect vehicle remain undisclosed. Police are relying heavily on public cooperation to fill in the gaps.

Hit-and-run incidents are a concerning issue for Miami authorities, who stress the importance of drivers remaining at the scene of an accident. “Leaving the scene of a crash without assisting the victim is a criminal act,” the spokesperson added. “We need everyone to understand the gravity of such actions.”

Community members are encouraged to report any information they might have regarding the incident. Tips can be submitted anonymously to the Miami Police Department or Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
