Driver Fatally Shot After Altercation With Houston Pedestrian

Police said the pedestrian fled after the shooting, while investigators later located a possible suspect several blocks from the scene.

HOUSTON, TX — A driver was shot and killed Thursday after an altercation with a pedestrian in north Houston near the Heights area, according to police, who were investigating the circumstances of the confrontation and working to determine whether a person located later Thursday was connected to the killing.

Houston police said officers were called to the 200 block of Archer Street shortly before 1:30 p.m. Sept. 3. Officers and firefighters found a man dead in the driver’s seat of a car that had crashed. Authorities said the shooting happened during an encounter between the driver and a pedestrian, but police had not publicly explained what led to the dispute.

Investigators said the driver was behind the wheel of a gray Honda Civic when the confrontation occurred. Police said the pedestrian shot the driver during the altercation. The wounded driver then lost control of the vehicle and crashed, according to the Houston Police Department account reported from the scene.

Police reviewed video and spoke with witnesses as they worked to establish what happened. Authorities said the evidence indicated the pedestrian fired into the vehicle before running away. FOX 26 Houston reported that police said the person fled west on Archer Street toward Main Street.

Initial reports described the shooter as an unknown suspect who remained at large. In an update Thursday evening, however, police said they had located a possible suspect in the 400 block of Walton Street. Authorities did not immediately release the person’s identity or say whether the person had been arrested or charged.

The name and age of the driver had not been publicly released in the reports reviewed Friday. Police also had not released a confirmed description or identity for the person believed to have fired the shot. Investigators had not announced a motive or provided details about what started the altercation.

The shooting unfolded in a north Houston neighborhood near Interstate 45 and North Main Street. Early information from the scene indicated that a vehicle with apparent gunfire damage had crashed and that a caller reported seeing someone running from the area with a gun. Investigators later developed the account of the confrontation through witness statements and video.

Police continued investigating the fatal shooting Friday. Authorities had not publicly announced charges, and it remained unclear whether the possible suspect located on Walton Street had been formally identified as the person involved in the shooting.
