MOBILE, AL – A doorbell camera recorded the moment Jaylen Mia Lupton dashed onto her neighbor’s porch, confessing a shocking crime. “I killed my grandmother. I need help,” she declared.
Cheryl Edwards, alerted by Lupton’s presence, confronted her at the front door. A scuffle ensued. Edwards managed to fend Lupton off with a mop, but Lupton returned, forcing her way inside. “Help me. Help,” Lupton pleaded.
Edwards managed to escape, though she was knocked down and suffered a bruised hip. “She demanded my keys,” Edwards recounted. “It was terrifying.”
Sheriff Paul Burch reported that Lupton allegedly murdered her grandmother, 70-year-old Diane Morrow, on Saturday. Morrow was found in her yard, bludgeoned with a mallet.
Edwards, a friend of Morrow, described living next to the family as difficult, citing frequent disturbances and property damage. She suspected Morrow’s family of abuse, recalling warnings she had given Morrow about potential harm.
Edwards believed Lupton was under the influence of drugs during the incident. “Her eyes were unnaturally large,” she said. Sheriff Burch confirmed drugs were found at the scene, noting Lupton’s paranoia was consistent with methamphetamine use.
Animal control seized 21 dogs from the property, which Edwards claimed had attacked her pet twice. “It’s unclear why they had so many dogs,” she noted.
The traumatic event has left Edwards deeply shaken. She revealed that just a week earlier, she had witnessed a hit-and-run nearby. “Two weeks in a row, we’ve encountered death,” she said.
