Dive team finds car in pond that may solve cold case

BRUNSWICK, GA – A Florida-based dive team has captured national attention after discovering a submerged car with human remains in a Brunswick pond, possibly linked to a decades-old cold case involving a missing couple.

The Sunshine State Sonar team, acting on a crucial tip, located the vehicle at a site near the Royal Inn, where Charles and Katherine Romer were last seen on April 8, 1980. The couple, wealthy travelers from New York, vanished without a trace, leaving behind a mystery that has puzzled investigators for over 40 years.

John Martin, leading the dive team, described the eerie experience of searching the dark waters by touch. “When you find a vehicle in front of a pond at the hotel where they disappeared, that’s significant,” Martin remarked. Upon retrieving a femur bone from the car, the area was immediately designated a crime scene.

In addition to the remains, the team found several personal items, including jewelry and a woman’s shoes. Notably, the vehicle was a custom Lincoln Continental with Charles Romer’s initials engraved on the back seat, adding to the evidence that the car belonged to the missing couple.

For years, rumors circulated among former guests of the Royal Inn about bodies hidden in the nearby pond. The recent discovery has confirmed those suspicions, leaving the community stunned. “To think there were bodies back there all along is just unbelievable,” said a local resident.

Despite a previous search of the pond shortly after the Romers’ disappearance, Martin believes that authorities lacked the sophisticated equipment necessary for a thorough investigation at the time. The Sunshine State Sonar team, founded in 2022, has since played a pivotal role in solving several cold cases.

While the investigation continues, this breakthrough offers hope to those seeking closure in a case that has haunted Brunswick for generations. The discovery is seen as a significant step toward unraveling the mystery of the Romers’ disappearance.
