Brickell Crane Collapse Sends Four People to Miami Hospitals

Three construction workers and a woman were hospitalized with minor injuries after the crane fell near Brickell Bay Drive.

MIAMI, FL — Four people were hospitalized Monday morning after a crane collapsed near Brickell Bay Drive and Southeast 12th Street, damaging vehicles, sparking a fire and forcing emergency crews to carry out what officials described as a complex rescue operation.

City of Miami Fire-Rescue crews responded shortly after 8:30 a.m. Sept. 14. Three construction workers and a woman were taken to hospitals, authorities said. Officials reported that the injuries were minor and that everyone at the construction site had been accounted for after the collapse.

Fire-Rescue Lt. Pete Sanchez said the three injured workers were ages 47, 27 and 29. Rescue crews had to cut into a container at the site to free workers after the equipment came down. One of the injured workers was the crane operator, according to local authorities. Sanchez said all 18 workers at the site were accounted for.

A woman in a white vehicle also escaped as the crane fell. Video from the scene showed the downed equipment near a vehicle that caught fire, sending dark smoke into the air. Authorities said the woman was taken to HCA Florida Mercy Hospital with minor injuries. The three workers were transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center.

Three vehicles were damaged in the collapse, according to emergency officials. Images and video from the area showed the crane extending across part of the roadway while firefighters, police officers and rescue personnel worked around the damaged vehicles and construction equipment.

Sanchez said the outcome was notable given the size of the collapse and the rescue that followed. He said all four patients were able to be removed from the scene or get themselves out with minor injuries. Officials did not report any deaths.

The collapse also disrupted traffic through the busy Brickell neighborhood. Miami police closed Brickell Bay Drive between Southeast 12th Street and Southeast 13th Street while crews worked at the scene. Authorities asked motorists to avoid the area and follow directions from officers managing traffic around the closure.

Officials had not released a cause for the crane collapse by late Monday morning. Authorities did not immediately announce whether a mechanical failure, site conditions or another factor contributed to the incident, and investigators were continuing to examine what happened.

The incident came as emergency crews remained at the site and officials worked to secure the area around the fallen equipment. Brickell Bay Drive remained affected by the response, and authorities had not announced when the closed section of the road would fully reopen.
