DETROIT, MI – A former educator at Beckham Academy is facing serious legal charges following an alleged assault that took place off school premises. Jerome Younger, 54, has been arraigned on charges of first and second-degree criminal sexual conduct, accused of assaulting a student at his residence.
The Detroit Public Schools Community District confirmed Younger is on administrative leave and barred from school property pending the outcome of both an internal investigation and any legal proceedings. The district assured the public they are unaware of any additional allegations against Younger.
Younger, who has over 28 years of experience in education, was previously involved with several mentorship programs, including the Detroit Police Department’s Junior Police Cadet Program. His biography claims he has spent over 38 years teaching teens employment skills.
Authorities have set a cash surety bond at $250,000, requiring Younger to wear a tether and avoid contact with the alleged victim if released. The Macomb County Prosecutor, Peter Lucido, emphasized the gravity of the charges, categorizing them among the most serious under Michigan law. Lucido affirmed the commitment of his office to seek justice for victims of sexual violence.
The Detroit Public Schools Community District’s statement highlighted their proactive approach in handling the situation and reiterated their commitment to student safety. They are working closely with law enforcement to ensure a comprehensive investigation.
Community members have expressed shock and concern over the allegations, given Younger’s long-standing involvement in educational and mentorship roles. The case has sparked discussions about safety and trust within educational environments.
As the investigation continues, the district and local authorities urge anyone with additional information to come forward. Younger’s next court appearance is yet to be scheduled.
