Montgomery County investigators have not announced a suspect or motive in the death of James Blount.
CONROE, TX — Montgomery County sheriff’s investigators are examining the shooting death of 81-year-old James Blount, who was found Monday morning inside a home on Trails End Road in the Conroe area, officials said.
Deputies were called shortly after 8 a.m. Monday to the 19200 block of Trails End Road, just south of Texas 242, after a report that a man had been found dead at the residence. The case remains active, and authorities have not said what led to the shooting, whether Blount lived alone or whether they have identified a suspect.
Deputies entered the home after arriving at the scene and found Blount suffering from a gunshot wound, according to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office. Emergency medical personnel responded and pronounced him dead at the home. The sheriff’s office said Major Crimes detectives and crime scene investigators were sent to begin the initial investigation. The agency said the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office and the Montgomery County Fire Marshal’s Office also were assisting. Investigators have not released details about who reported the death, whether a weapon was recovered or whether there were signs of forced entry.
The sheriff’s office identified Blount as the person found dead at the residence. Local reporting and statements from people who knew him described Blount as a longtime trail rider with deep ties to the area’s livestock and rodeo community. His son said Blount had worked as a livestock officer with Montgomery County Constable Precinct 2. A longtime friend, Karen Stanley, said Blount rode with different trail-riding groups over the years and had become involved with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. “He loved his horses. He loved the whole atmosphere of the ride,” Stanley said.
The home is in a residential part of the Conroe area near the Texas 242 corridor, a road that links parts of southern Montgomery County with Interstate 45 and communities east of Conroe. Authorities have not said whether the shooting is being investigated as a homicide, a burglary-related killing or another type of death investigation. The sheriff’s office has described the case as active and continuing. No arrest had been announced by Thursday, and no public suspect description had been released.
The involvement of major crimes detectives means investigators are treating the death as a serious criminal inquiry while they collect evidence, interview possible witnesses and review the scene. Crime scene investigators typically document the home, gather physical evidence and preserve items that may help establish what happened before deputies arrived. The District Attorney’s Office may review evidence as the investigation develops, while the Fire Marshal’s Office can assist with scene processing and related investigative needs. Officials have not said when they expect to release an autopsy finding or further details about the manner of death.
The case drew attention in part because of Blount’s age and his connection to the local trail-riding community. Friends described him as someone known through horses, livestock work and rodeo circles rather than through public conflict. ABC13 reported that Blount’s son declined an on-camera interview but shared images of himself and his father. Stanley’s comments placed Blount among the people who helped keep trail-riding traditions visible around Montgomery County and the Houston region, where rodeo season and livestock events are major community markers.
Investigators are asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office at 936-538-5900 and reference case number 26A187258. Anonymous tips may be submitted to Multi-County Crime Stoppers at 800-392-7867. As of Thursday, June 4, the sheriff’s office had not announced an arrest, a motive or the next public briefing in the case.
