A drug trafficking operation is busted with 17 people arrested

ORLANDO, FL – A significant drug bust in Central Florida has led to the arrest of alleged drug traffickers, marking a major step in the fight against the fentanyl crisis. The operation, known as “Operation Burn, Baby Burn,” culminated in the arrest of 17 individuals suspected of distributing fentanyl and cocaine across the region. This extensive investigation involved a year of surveillance and undercover operations, according to local authorities.

Law enforcement officials seized a substantial amount of illicit substances, including six pounds of fentanyl and four pounds of cocaine. The street value of these drugs is estimated to exceed $1.5 million. Alongside the drugs, authorities recovered nine firearms, one of which had been reported stolen, and approximately $50,000 in cash.

Orange County Sheriff John Mina revealed that the drugs were imported from California, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. Those arrested now face serious charges of conspiracy and trafficking in fentanyl and cocaine. If convicted, they are looking at mandatory minimum sentences ranging from 15 to 25 years.

Attorney General James Upmeyer commended the efforts of local law enforcement in tackling the fentanyl crisis, noting that Florida is experiencing historically low crime rates. He attributed this success to robust support for law enforcement and the decisive action taken against those who threaten community safety.

The operation’s impact is underscored by the sheer potential harm of the seized drugs. Six pounds of fentanyl alone could have caused fatal overdoses in 1.3 million people, highlighting the critical nature of this law enforcement effort.

The arrests span across Orange, Osceola, Polk, and Hillsborough counties, with a total of 19 individuals charged in connection to the drug trafficking operations. Authorities have clarified that none of the suspects are in the country illegally. However, several have prior criminal records, including charges of attempted murder and other violent crimes.

The success of this operation is a testament to the dedication and collaboration among various law enforcement agencies, working tirelessly to dismantle drug networks and safeguard the community.
