A juvenile, aged 12, was apprehended by the authorities in Washington, D.C., following his alleged involvement in a carjacking. The incident occurred around 1 p.m. on Sunday at the crossroads of Martin Luther King Jr Avenue and U Street in Southeast D.C., as reported by the Metropolitan Police Department.
The victim, a woman who wishes to remain anonymous, reported that the young suspect demanded her car keys. She also noted that he appeared to have a weapon concealed in his waistband. Upon her refusal to surrender her keys, the suspect reportedly fled the scene on foot.
The woman recounted her ordeal to FOX 5 DC, stating that she had just parked her car and was about to enter a restaurant when the attempted carjacking occurred. She said the boy seemed taken aback by her refusal and subsequently ran away. The incident left her shaken and in a state of shock.
The Metropolitan Police Department reported that the suspect was apprehended shortly after the incident. Upon his arrest, it was discovered that he was indeed in possession of a firearm. The suspect was identified as a 12-year-old boy in a press release issued by the police on Monday afternoon.
The boy now faces charges of armed carjacking and possession of a firearm without a license. The victim expressed her concern about the escalating youth violence in the city, stating that it’s becoming increasingly severe and the age of offenders is decreasing.
The police have refrained from releasing the name of the suspect due to his age.
