2 killed, 3 injured in high-speed pursuit

SAN LEANDRO, CA – A high-speed pursuit by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) ended in a tragic crash early Saturday morning, resulting in two fatalities and three injuries, including two officers. The incident transpired on westbound Interstate 238 near the East 14th Street off-ramp.

According to the CHP, the pursuit began when officers attempted to stop a speeding white Mercedes on I-580 in Castro Valley. The driver refused to pull over, leading officers on a chase that culminated in San Leandro. The Mercedes lost control at the off-ramp, crashing into a sound wall and killing the driver and a passenger. A second passenger sustained serious injuries.

Moments later, the pursuing CHP vehicle also collided with the sound wall, although it did not make contact with the Mercedes. Both officers in the patrol car were seriously injured.

The incident has reignited debates over the risks associated with police pursuits. Legal analyst Michael Cardoza noted the inherent dangers, emphasizing the difficulty officers face when navigating high-speed chases.

Emily Cleveland, from the Coalition for Police Accountability, argued that this crash underscores the need for policy changes regarding police pursuits. “Officers often express reluctance to engage in such chases due to safety concerns,” Cleveland stated.

The crash is under investigation by the CHP’s Golden Gate Division, which will examine the circumstances and potential need for procedural adjustments.

As the investigation unfolds, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the perils involved in high-speed pursuits, affecting both law enforcement and the public.
