Zookeeper mauled to death by lion

ABEOKUTA, NIGERIA – A tragic incident unfolded at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library Wildlife Park when a zookeeper was fatally attacked by a lion after allowing visitors into the enclosure past the park’s closing hours. The park’s management confirmed the details of the incident, which has sparked discussions about safety protocols and procedural adherence.

The victim, Babaji Daule, 35, was an experienced handler known for his confidence and rapport with the lions. On Saturday, Daule suffered a fatal neck bite while in the process of feeding the lion. Despite the park being officially closed, he had permitted a small group of visitors to witness the feeding, a decision that would prove to be fatal.

According to park officials, Daule left the protective gate open, believing his familiarity with the lion would keep him safe. Unfortunately, the lion attacked, resulting in Daule’s immediate death. In the aftermath, the lion was shot to prevent any further danger to others in the vicinity.

The incident has raised questions about the adherence to safety protocols, as it deviated from the park’s standard feeding procedures. It is still unclear if Daule had any authorization to allow visitors into the enclosure after hours, which is typically against park policy.

Police spokesperson Omolola Odutola addressed the negligence involved, highlighting that Daule failed to secure the locks and barriers of the lion’s enclosure before proceeding with the feeding. This oversight tragically allowed the lion to attack Daule.

In response to the incident, the park management extended heartfelt condolences to Daule’s family and emphasized their commitment to enforcing safety measures for both staff and visitors. The park has initiated a review of their safety protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future.

This tragedy underscores the inherent risks involved in working with wild animals and the importance of strict adherence to established safety guidelines. The park has promised transparency in their investigation and reassured the public of their dedication to maintaining a safe environment.

The loss of Daule has been deeply felt by his colleagues and the community, who remember him as a passionate and dedicated zookeeper. His untimely death serves as a somber reminder of the unpredictable nature of working with wildlife.
