The juveniles were riding an electric bicycle when a driver struck them Wednesday night and fled, according to investigators.
MIAMI-DADE, FL. — A girl was reported killed and a boy was injured after a driver struck the two juveniles as they rode an electric bicycle Wednesday night in Northwest Miami-Dade and fled the scene, according to information provided about the crash.
Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputies responded at about 8:40 p.m. to the area of Northwest Seventh Avenue and Northwest 117th Street. Investigators said the juveniles, a boy and a girl, were sharing an electric bicycle when they were struck. Early verified reports said both children were taken to Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition. A later report indicated that the girl died, although that development had not yet appeared in the law enforcement or local-news material independently reviewed Thursday.
Investigators said the driver was traveling north on Northwest Seventh Avenue and attempted to turn left when the vehicle struck the juveniles on Northwest 117th Street. The driver then left the crash scene, authorities said. Deputies have not publicly identified the motorist or released a confirmed description of the vehicle involved.
First responders found the boy and girl lying unresponsive in the roadway, according to a report citing the sheriff’s office. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue paramedics transported both juveniles to Ryder Trauma Center for emergency treatment. Their names and ages had not been released in the verified reports reviewed Thursday.
Video from the scene showed deputies, firefighters and other emergency crews working near debris scattered in the roadway. An electric bicycle could be seen among the debris as investigators examined the area around the intersection. Authorities have not released a detailed reconstruction of the crash or said whether investigators recovered surveillance video showing the collision.
A witness told WSVN-TV that the driver continued after the collision, stopped farther down the block and appeared to look toward the injured juveniles before driving away. Authorities had not independently confirmed that account. Investigators have not said whether they know where the vehicle went after leaving the scene.
Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Daniel Castillo urged people who were near the intersection, along with businesses that have surveillance cameras in the area, to provide information that could help detectives identify the driver. Investigators were continuing to seek witnesses and video that might document the vehicle before or after the crash.
The crash remained under investigation Thursday. No arrest had been announced in the verified information available, and authorities had not released the driver’s identity, a vehicle description or additional details about what led to the collision. Officials were expected to provide further information as the investigation developed.
