Man charged with murder after shooting cousin with a bow in Colorado

Carlos Alberto Trejo, a 36-year-old man from Colorado, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder after he allegedly killed his cousin, 37-year-old Martin Rodarte, with a compound bow and arrow, according to officials.

After committing the crime, Trejo reportedly attempted to turn himself in by trying to break into a police station in Colorado Springs.

At around 1:23 am on December 18, police caught Trejo trying to trespass the secure back parking lot of the police station by breaking a glass window.

When confronted by the police, Trejo admitted to the murder and said he “just woke up” and shot Rodarte with an arrow.

“I just woke up and shot my friend in the chest,” he said on the phone call. “I shot him with an arrow.”

However, the police were skeptical, as Trejo reportedly made a false report just two days prior. He called the police on December 16 requesting help. Trejo allegedly said, “there was a situation in the apartment” which he had to escape from.

However, according to a sworn probable cause affidavit, he refused to provide further information. He was also uncooperative when officers tried to call back.

When police arrived at a welfare check on Trejo at Guthrie’s Bar and Grill a few blocks from his residence, Trejo told them he was on acid. He was then transported to a local hospital for a medical evaluation to check the possibility of “a possible acid overdose.”

Despite the skepticism, the officers responded to his apartment and found his door unlocked. Inside, they discovered the body of the victim on the bedroom floor of the apartment next to a compound archery bow.

Trejo is currently being held at the El Paso County Jail. He will remain detained on a $500,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court for his preliminary hearing on January 25.
