Young woman killed by man in U.S. illegally

BOWIE, MD – The community of Bowie is grappling with shock and grief following the tragic discovery of 19-year-old Toccara Thompson’s body. Police confirmed that the remains found along Route 50 in Anne Arundel County on Sunday belonged to the missing teenager, who was last seen on August 22.

Authorities have arrested Hugo Renee Hernandez Mendez, 35, in connection with Thompson’s death. He faces charges of first and second-degree murder. According to police, Hernandez Mendez is in the country illegally and is now subject to an ICE detainer.

The arrest took place at a residence on Cambridge Drive, where investigators believe Thompson was murdered. Neighbors expressed disbelief that such a crime could occur in their quiet community. “It’s deeply saddening,” one resident remarked, “We hoped for a different outcome.”

Surveillance footage showed Thompson leaving her car in Langley Park around 1:30 a.m. on the day she disappeared. Further video evidence indicated she was seen hours later on University Boulevard in Hyattsville, before allegedly entering Hernandez Mendez’s vehicle.

Police tracked the suspect’s SUV to his home, leading to his arrest. They believe Hernandez Mendez discarded Thompson’s body near the highway, though the investigation into their connection and the circumstances of her death continues.

Residents were stunned by the police presence in their neighborhood last Thursday morning, unaware it related to Thompson’s case. Many expressed their sorrow and offered condolences to Thompson’s family.

At a news conference, the police chief stated that no additional suspects are being sought, though the investigation remains active. Hernandez Mendez is currently held without bond and awaits a court appearance.
