Wrong-way crash kills two drivers

POMPANO BEACH, FL – A devastating wrong-way crash on the Florida Turnpike has left two people dead and another critically injured. The collision occurred early Tuesday morning when a white vehicle traveling the wrong direction slammed into another car, killing both drivers instantly.

Authorities revealed that the wrong-way driver had entered the turnpike at the Atlantic Boulevard ramp, heading south in the northbound lanes. Despite the presence of flashing warning signs designed to prevent such incidents, the driver continued on the perilous path.

Gary Keri O’Neil, a safety advocate who lost his daughter Marissa and her friend Kaitlin in a similar crash nearly 12 years ago, expressed his frustration. He has been instrumental in implementing the warning systems across the state, which reportedly have a success rate of 88 to 92 percent in turning wrong-way drivers around.

O’Neil highlighted the effectiveness of the TAPCO early warning system, which covers 80 percent of the turnpike’s exits. The system alerts authorities by sending out a 911 call and capturing images of the vehicle, while also displaying warnings on message boards.

Despite these measures, the recent crash has prompted investigators to scrutinize why the warnings failed to deter the driver. O’Neil remains determined to enhance these systems further, driven by the memory of his daughter.

“I vowed to save lives, and we’ve succeeded in doing so many times,” O’Neil stated. “But we must do more.”

The identities of those involved have been released. The wrong-way driver hailed from Jensen Beach, while the other driver was a 19-year-old from the Orlando area. The surviving passenger, a 22-year-old from Key West, is currently hospitalized.

Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragic accident.
