Woman killed and two men shot in a migrant dispute over a necklace

NEW YORK, NY – A deadly shooting early Monday morning near a migrant shelter on Randall’s Island has left the community on edge. The incident, which occurred around 3:30 a.m., resulted in the death of a 44-year-old woman and injuries to two others, prompting a significant police response and raising concerns about safety and quality of life in the area.

Authorities responded to a 911 call reporting the shooting at Field 71, approximately a quarter-mile from the migrant shelter. First responders found the woman with fatal gunshot wounds to her face and neck. A 32-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to his throat, and a 31-year-old woman was shot in her back; both are currently in stable condition at Harlem Hospital.

Residents and visitors to Randall’s Island expressed little surprise at the violence, citing ongoing issues with safety and public behavior. Throughout the day, police increased their presence, deploying dozens of officers and tow trucks to the area. Deputy Commissioner of Operations Kaz Daughtry explained that the enforcement action aimed to address numerous complaints about late-night activities, including drinking, smoking, and partying.

The shooting reportedly stemmed from a robbery earlier in the day. Migrants indicated that the violence was triggered by a chain-snatching incident near the public bathrooms, which had gone unreported. The police investigation is still in its early stages, with authorities gathering more information and urging anyone with tips to come forward.

The NYPD’s response included confiscating 19 mopeds, one of which was stolen, along with a stolen motorcycle and 15 unregistered vehicles. This crackdown is part of a broader effort to improve the quality of life on Randall’s Island, an area that also features a horticultural preserve.

Despite the shelter’s curfew from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. and the presence of metal detectors, many residents and law enforcement officers reported lax enforcement of these rules. The police’s show of force aims to signal a commitment to addressing these issues and ensuring community safety.

The manhunt for the shooter continues, and the police are appealing to the public for any information that could lead to an arrest. The Mayor’s office has reiterated the importance of following shelter regulations to prevent further incidents.
