NEWARK, DE – A routine safety drill at a Newark middle school turned tragic Thursday morning when a woman was fatally injured in a freak accident involving two school buses. The incident occurred in the parking lot of Cobbs Middle School, where 54-year-old Wanda Montalvo was pinned between the vehicles.
Authorities report that Montalvo, a beloved school bus driver, went into cardiac arrest after being trapped. She was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. The Delaware State Police are leading the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
The tragic event unfolded just before 7 a.m. during an evacuation drill. According to initial reports, Montalvo was at the rear of one bus when another bus inadvertently rolled back, striking her. The incident has left the school community in shock and mourning.
Montalvo’s sons are struggling to comprehend the sudden loss of their mother, who was known for her dedication to her job and her family. “She loved driving buses and caring for children,” one of her sons said, recalling her passion for her work.
Students were present on the buses during the drill, but fortunately, none required hospitalization. The school district confirmed that the accident was a result of the drill and expressed their commitment to supporting those affected.
In the wake of the tragedy, Montalvo is remembered as a loving mother and grandmother, deeply cherished by her community. Her coworkers and students often referred to her affectionately as “Miss Wanda.”
A spokesperson for the Christina School District stated they are providing support to students, families, and staff during this difficult time. The investigation by Delaware State Police continues as the community grapples with the loss of a devoted member.
