Kiara Agnew, a 23-year-old woman who was found dead at a Mexican resort.
Agnew was celebrating her birthday with her boyfriend, Ryan Friesen, 26, when she was discovered deceased at the Grand Sunset Princess Resort. Friesen, an ice hockey player, has reportedly been detained in connection with her death.
The state prosecutor’s office in Quintana Roo stated that a foreign national had been arrested in connection with the Canadian woman’s death. No further details have been disclosed.
Katlyn Levesque, Agnew’s aunt, expressed her devastation to CBC News and stated that the family is still waiting for autopsy results. She revealed that Friesen’s family has been in touch with the family and shared their grief.
Friesen plays for the Junior “B” ice hockey team in British Columbia. Prior to her untimely death, Agnew worked at the Dawson Creek branch of Lake View Credit Union. Levesque stated that Agnew had been looking forward to the trip to Mexico with Friesen since Christmas.
Local authorities are assisting the families with consular assistance, according to Global Affairs Canada. As a result of privacy concerns, Charlotte MacLeod, a representative of Global Affairs, could not provide any further information.
