MEMPHIS, TN – A man is facing serious charges after a weekend shooting at an Orange Mound apartment complex that left a woman injured and a toddler shaken. The suspect, Jameson Cameron, remains in custody as investigators unravel the events that led to the Saturday morning gunfire.
Cameron is charged with 12 offenses, including five counts of attempted second-degree murder and child abuse. According to Memphis police, he allegedly opened fire during a gathering at the complex, striking a 30-year-old woman in the leg. A two-year-old girl, who was nearby at the time, suffered injuries from debris but was not hit by a bullet, contrary to initial fears that she had been shot in the face.
The scene was chaotic, with numerous people, including children, present during the shooting. Authorities are now trying to understand why Cameron, who is reportedly related to some of the attendees, would target the home. A neighbor familiar with the people involved expressed bewilderment over the incident, unable to fathom what might have provoked such violence.
In the immediate aftermath, Cameron fled the scene but later called a relative at the residence. During the call, he questioned why his name was mentioned in connection with the shooting, claiming the incident was an accident. He eventually turned himself in to law enforcement.
As the community grapples with the incident, there is a sense of relief that the young girl’s injuries are not life-threatening and that the outcome was not more tragic. Cameron is currently being held on a $750,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court soon.
The case highlights the ongoing struggle with gun violence in the area, raising concerns about safety and the impact of such events on families and neighborhoods. Residents are hopeful for justice and healing as the legal process unfolds.
