Police said the suspect surrendered after an overnight standoff in Armstrong County.
GILPIN TOWNSHIP, PA — A 37-year-old woman was charged with criminal homicide after police said she fatally stabbed her mother-in-law Sunday inside an Armstrong County home and then barricaded herself nearby for about nine hours.
Mengqi Zhang, of Gilpin Township, is accused in the death of 79-year-old Rosalind Cooper, who was found with multiple stab wounds inside a home on Schenley Road. Police said the case began as an emergency call about an elderly woman who had fallen and was bleeding, then shifted into a stabbing investigation before officers arrived. Zhang was taken into custody early Monday and is being held without bail at the Armstrong County Prison.
Officers from the Southern Armstrong Regional Police Department were called to the Schenley Road area at about 4:34 p.m. Sunday. Southern Armstrong Regional Police Chief Christopher Fabec said officers first received a report of an elderly woman who had fallen, but dispatchers later told them the woman may have been stabbed. When officers reached the home, they found Cooper dead inside. Investigators said Cooper’s son told police that his mother and his wife had been arguing before the stabbing. Police said the suspect then left the scene and went to a nearby home, where she refused to come out.
Police established a perimeter around the nearby home and called the Pennsylvania State Police Special Emergency Response Team. State police took over the standoff as negotiators tried for hours to persuade Zhang to surrender. Investigators said Zhang threatened to kill responding officers during the standoff. No officers were reported injured. Zhang came out of the home at about 1:20 a.m. Monday and was taken into custody without further incident. The Southern Armstrong Regional Police Department later thanked responding agencies for their “professionalism and cooperation” during the response.
A criminal complaint identified Zhang as the wife of Cooper’s son. Police said Zhang later told investigators she had argued with Cooper, took a knife from the kitchen and stabbed her. The complaint said Zhang stabbed and slashed Cooper in the hand and stomach before leaving for her own home nearby. Investigators also said Zhang washed the knife, changed clothes and used towels to wipe her body after the stabbing. Police have not said what the argument was about, and no motive beyond the reported dispute had been publicly released as of Monday.
The killing drew a large police response to a rural part of Gilpin Township, a community in Armstrong County northeast of Pittsburgh. Police asked the public to avoid the area while officers worked around the barricaded home. Local reports showed police vehicles and tactical teams near the scene during the overnight response. The case moved quickly from a medical emergency call to a homicide investigation, with officers first focused on the Schenley Road home where Cooper was found and then on the nearby residence where Zhang had barricaded herself.
Zhang has been charged with criminal homicide and aggravated assault. Butler Radio reported that court records show two counts of aggravated assault and that Zhang was denied bail. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for July 9. At that hearing, prosecutors are expected to present evidence for a district judge to decide whether the case should move forward in Armstrong County court. Police have not said whether more charges could be filed. Investigators also have not publicly released autopsy details or a full timeline of Cooper’s final moments.
Neighbors and drivers near the Schenley Road area encountered an extended police presence Sunday evening and early Monday as officers blocked access around the home. The standoff lasted through the night before Zhang surrendered. Police said the arrest ended without further injury after hours of negotiation. The victim’s name, age and relationship to the suspect were released as investigators reviewed the scene, the knife and statements from witnesses and Zhang. Authorities did not report any other victims connected to the stabbing or the barricade situation.
Zhang remained in Armstrong County Prison without bail Monday as the homicide case moved toward its July 9 preliminary hearing. Police said the investigation is continuing.
