Deputies said the suspected gunman died at the scene from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
KISSIMMEE, FL — A woman and her 18-year-old son were shot Monday evening at a Kissimmee-area apartment complex in an incident that left a suspected gunman dead, Osceola County Sheriff Chris Blackmon said.
The shooting brought deputies, fire crews and investigators to Sheffield Circle shortly after 5 p.m. Monday, turning a residential area into an active crime scene. The woman was taken to a hospital in critical condition, while her son was listed in serious condition. Both were undergoing surgery Monday night, officials said. Detectives said they were still working to confirm the relationship between the woman and the dead man, but they believed the shooting may have been domestic-related.
Deputies were called to 2841 Sheffield Circle after a 911 report of gunfire, according to the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office. First responders found three people with gunshot wounds. Osceola County Fire Rescue initially reported that two victims were taken to the hospital and one person had died. Later Monday night, sheriff’s officials said the dead man appeared to have shot himself. “Detectives are still confirming the relationship between the woman and the deceased male, but believe this shooting may be domestically related,” the sheriff’s office said.
The names of the woman, her son and the dead man had not been released as of Monday night. Officials did not say whether the shooting happened inside a unit, outside the building or in another part of the complex. They also did not release details about the firearm, the number of shots fired or whether any other people were inside the home when deputies arrived. The complex is near U.S. Highway 192 in west Kissimmee, in a busy area with apartments, homes, stores and commuter traffic. FOX 35 reported that the scene was behind a Target near Sheffield Circle.
Blackmon said the woman was in critical condition and that her 18-year-old son was in serious condition. Both were in surgery when deputies provided an update Monday night. Authorities described the dead man as the suspected shooter, but they did not release his age or hometown. Investigators also did not say whether deputies had been called to the address before Monday. The sheriff’s office said no other details were immediately available, a sign that detectives were still processing the scene, gathering statements and notifying relatives before releasing more information.
The shooting was being treated as an active death investigation with a possible domestic link, not as a search for an at-large gunman. Officials did not announce any arrests or pending charges Monday night because the suspected shooter was dead. Detectives were expected to review 911 recordings, medical updates, witness accounts and any available surveillance video from the apartment complex or nearby businesses. The medical examiner would be expected to confirm the dead man’s cause and manner of death. Investigators had not given a timeline for when more information would be released.
Residents described the shooting as a shock in a neighborhood they considered close and family-oriented. Neighbor Tyler Joy Grant said the family had recently moved into the community and that she had spoken with them one day before the shooting. “It was a brief interaction, so it was just a hi, bye, friendly neighborhood,” Grant said. “They are new to the neighborhood, so it was just a warm welcome.” She said neighbors often greet each other around the complex and described the area as cordial and tight-knit.
Grant said the violence was jarring because it happened where residents expect to feel safe. “It’s just completely shocking, especially being home. You want home to be a safe space,” she said. She added that the incident left neighbors thinking about what may be happening behind closed doors. Officials did not say whether the woman, her son and the dead man all lived at the address. By Monday night, the investigation remained centered on the Sheffield Circle scene, with detectives working to determine the full sequence of events before the gunfire.
The woman and her son remained hospitalized Monday night, and the suspected gunman was dead at the scene. The next major update is expected after investigators confirm identities, family relationships and the victims’ medical conditions.
