Three women survived the crash, which shut down northbound traffic near Beltway 8 for several hours Wednesday night.
HOUSTON, TX — Three women were injured Wednesday night when their vehicle broke through a barrier on an elevated HOV lane and fell onto the northbound lanes of the Southwest Freeway near Beltway 8, authorities said.
The one-vehicle crash happened at about 8 p.m. July 22 near the Sam Houston Tollway. The vehicle had been traveling southbound in the elevated high-occupancy vehicle lane before it entered the park-and-ride area and went through a barrier, according to police accounts reported by local news organizations.
The vehicle landed on Interstate 69 below and blocked the northbound freeway. Houston TranStar listed the crash at 7:58 p.m. and reported that the left shoulder, right shoulder and all five travel lanes were affected.
Police said the three occupants were women and described their injuries as non-life-threatening. They were conscious and talking after the crash and were taken to an area hospital for treatment. Their names and further details about their conditions had not been released.
Drivers who stopped at the scene used sledgehammers in an effort to help free people trapped inside the damaged vehicle, according to video and reporting from the scene. Emergency responders later took control of the rescue and crash investigation.
The wreck forced authorities to close the northbound lanes near Beltway 8. Traffic backed up for miles as officers and emergency crews worked at the scene, and officials warned that the closure was expected to last for hours.
The Houston Police Department and Metropolitan Transit Authority police were investigating. Authorities had not said what caused the driver to leave the elevated lane or whether speed, weather, another vehicle or a mechanical problem played a role.
No injuries involving people in vehicles traveling on the freeway below had been reported in the initial accounts. Officials also had not announced whether the elevated barrier was damaged beyond the point where the vehicle went through it.
The freeway remained affected late Wednesday while crews investigated and cleared the scene. Authorities had not released additional information about the occupants or announced any citations as of early Thursday.
